What is Urinary Tract Infection?
Urinary Tract Infection in dogs and cats is a bacterial infection occurring anywhere along your pet's urinary tract (kidneys, bladder and urethra). Lower urinary tract infections are usually caused by bacteria, often from the intestine, which enter the urethra and work their way up to the bladder. Both cats and dogs are prone to UTI, but it is more common in older animals and those with adrenal disorders or diabetes. Recurring infections are likely if your dog or cat has already suffered UTI.
How can I tell if my pet has UTI?
One of the first warning signs of cat or dog urinary tract infection might be some straining, pain or discomfort when urinating, but any change in urinary habits could signal UTI.
Watch out for incontinence or increased frequency of urination, the ability to pass only a very small or an abnormally large amount of urine, and urination in inappropriate places. Cats often stop using the litter box altogether to urinate. Other symptoms may include the passing of urine which is cloudy or strong in odor, an increased thirst, and visible inflammation or irritation. Symptoms which may indicate UTI (but could also be signs of other illness) include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, fever and back pain.
Fast treatment of a suspected lower urinary tract infection is vital. Aside from relieving the pain and discomfort to your pet, it is important to prevent further infection. A simple bladder infection, if left untreated, can spread to the kidneys and cause irreparable damage or even Sepsis (an infection of the blood). UTIs can also cause bladder stones or crystals to form, which could lead to a life-threatening urethral blockage.
Conversely, UTIs can also be caused by bladder or kidney stones. The risk of developing these may be reduced by promoting good urinary health. Provide plenty of fresh water to help flush micro-organisms out of your pet’s urinary system. Take your dog for lots of outdoor walks to allow him plenty of opportunity to urinate; urine remaining too long in the bladder can be a cause of UTI.
During an infection, inflammation of the urethra makes urination painful. To clear up a urinary tract infection we need medicinal herbs that are:
We also need to support and strengthen the immune system to aid recovery. That’s why we’ve developed Primalix Number 1. It contains a powerful combination of plant medicines to battle cat and dog urinary tract infection and help protect your pet against relapse.
Our Herbal Constellation
Echinacea is the herbalist’s Number 1 weapon against infection. In fact, before the introduction of antibiotics, Echinacea was the standard treatment for infections of all kinds. In Germany today, Echinace is approved by the government to treat, among other things, urinary tract infection.
This wonder herb can be used to treat many of the symptoms of UTI. Echinacea is a pain-reliever, anti-bacterial agent and anti-inflammatory, not to mention an excellent general immune system booster to aid the body’s recovery from infection. A recent Belgian study demonstrated that frequent and/or painful urination caused by UTIs was “greatly improved” by the use of Echinacea.1
Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi)
This evergreen shrub grows in North America and Europe and sprouts red berries which are loved by bears, hence its common name, Bearberry. Uva ursi has been in use for centuries and was used by Native Americans to treat urinary tract infections.
It is the leaves of the plant that contain medicinal values. Uva ursi contains arbutin which converts to hydroquinone in the urinary tract. Hydroquinone is an antiseptic which veterinary scientists believe gives Uva ursi its powerful ability to fight cat and dog urinary tract infection.
In addition, Uva ursi contains astringent tannins which help shrink mucus membranes in the urethra and reduce inflammation. It also has the diuretic properties we need to flush bacteria from the kidneys. One clinical trial on women with cystitis found Uva ursi to also have a preventative effect on recurring urinary tract infection. Another study showed that Uva ursi can actually help prevent the formation of kidney stones.2
Goldenrod (Solidaginis virguarea)
Found growing wild in Europe, Asia and North America, Goldenrod is yet another centuries-old, tried-and-tested cure for UTI. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, analgesic and diuretic. This multiple action is extremely effective in combating infection and also prevents the formation of kidney or bladder stones by helping to remove urinary sediment.
Marshmallow root (Althea Officinalis)
The sweet treat we know as marshmallow originated in ancient Egypt and was made from Marshmallow root. But today's sugary confection by the same name contains no Marshmallow and could not be further from the soothing and healing properties of the actual Marshmallow plant.
Indigenous to Asia, the leaves, stem and root of Marshmallow are used for medicinal purposes. The root produces a large amount of mucilage, a glue-like substance that can be used to coat the body's own mucous membranes. It soothes irritation of mucous membranes in the urinary tract and reduces inflammation. Marshmallow also encourages phagocytosis, a process in which certain cells absorb and destroy unwanted micro-organisms in the blood.
Apple Cider Vinegar
In our herbal armory we have an additional weapon. Not only do the natural medicines we use in Primalix Number 1 have excellent properties for fighting dog urinary tract infection, but our proprietary extraction solvent used in all Primalix herbal extracts includes Apple Cider Vinegar, a well-known anti-bacterial agent. Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural detoxicant and contains over 40 vitamins and minerals. An abundance of anecdotal evidence attests to Apple Cider Vinegar’s success in treating UTI in dogs and cats.
Full Spectrum, Fully Un-Denatured
Our extraction solvent (menstruum) consists of our own proprietary blend of organic vegetable glycerin (very low glycemic load), apple cider vinegar, and crystal clear water which we ionize and purify through filters measuring one one-hundredth of a micron. We do not extract with alcohol, which is harmful to dogs and cats, nor with heat which "denatures" the very herbal constituents that do the healing.
Our herbs are organically cultivated (USDA Certified Organic or Wildharvested) to maintain purity. We then place them into our full spectrum extraction process one precious gallon at a time, at the peak of their potency cycle, agitating frequently for no less than a fortnight.
Ours is a time-honored tradition of tincturing that assures the constituent ratios in our extracts are identical to the synergistic nutrient ratios in the plants used.
We make and sell only our own products, so we know exactly what’s in them. We know of no other herbal extraction method that so painstakingly prepares Nature's bounty for our beloved animal companions.
Turn Ordinary Food Into Functional FoodSM
Our Primalix Number 1 for Cat and Dog Urinary Tract & Bladder Health - Functional Food DropsTM - let you add specific, beneficial, physiologically active food components (herbal nutrients) to wet or dry food.
Functional food is any food having health-promoting or disease-preventing properties beyond the basic function of supplying nutrients.
Nearly 2500 years ago Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
Animals do this instinctively. In the wild they “functionalize” their food by sniffing out and eating specific herbs to prevent disease and maintain natural wellness.
Now you can add function to any pet food. Give your domestic dog or cat a targeted dose of natural wellness with every meal.
For cat or dog urinary tract infection, administer by mouth on an empty stomach, or add to food.
Cats and small dogs (up to 20 lbs.): 1/2 dropper twice daily
Medium dogs (21 to 60 lbs.): 1 dropper twice daily
Large dogs (61 to 100 lbs.): 2 droppers twice daily
Giant dogs (101 lbs. and up) 3 droppers twice daily
When infection is present, treat daily for 10 days to 2 weeks or until symptoms are eliminated.
No infection (maintenance dosing) treat for 7 days continuously, then withhold for next 3 weeks, or simply treat for 1 week out of every month.
NOTE: One "dropper" equals one squeeze of the black bulb (1.0mL), which fills the pipette about half full. Refrigerate after opening.
