Bulldog with Chronic diarrhea

by A.J.
(MN)

I have a 1 year old English Bulldog that has had chronic diarrhea her entire life. I adopted her from a family when she was 5 months old that could no longer afford her medical expenses. She was the runt of the litter of course; I'm guessing that is due to her diarrhea.

Since I work in a Veterinary clinic, I felt that I would be able to handle the task of making this little girl better. I think I was wrong?

I have done fecal tests, fecal cultures, small & large intestinal biopsies (came back with nothing), bile acids test (normal), cobalmin test (normal), blood tests (always has weird values), urine tests (normal), giardia test (negative), liver tests (all normal), and xrays that have showed nothing. She always has clostridial overgrowth on her fecal tests.

I've tried probiotics, prebiotics, every antibiotic under the sun, prednisone (made it worse), dewormers, acupuncture, and strict diets that consisted of rice and cottage cheese, eventually switching to a low residue food that seemed to be working well.

She has also been on hypoallergenic diets, intestinal diets, and other bland diets. Just when I think she is starting to get better... everything falls down and we have to start all over again.

On top of the chronic diarrhea, she also has...of course since she is a bulldog, skin allergies (takes benadryl), and occasional vomiting spells (famotadine used when that occurs).

She is very special to me and I am determined to make her better. I have run into a brick wall, she has seen 3 different doctors at the practice I work at, and they have spoken to specialists about her problems, and they all don't seem to know an answer as to why this is happening to her and only prescribe more medications. Please does anyone have any advice???

Thank you!

so after having a successful run we have been fighting chronic diarrhea for two months now.
I know why you are all so frustrated. I feed Hope raw, she seems to build up an intolerance to her food every 2 months or so and I have to switch proteins. she was on elk but I've started cooking steaks for her with a bit of sweet potato with slippery elm and probiotics. so frustrating. it's been pretty much bad the whole time except for a few days when she took some antibiotics from the vet.

like everyone else, she is full of life, playful, drinks, sleeps and fortunately can hold herself until I get home. i'm at the end of my rope but I am going to keep trying. I've encountered a lot of owners who have had similar issues with their dogs.

diarrhea
by: Hope's Mom

For all you chronic sufferers out there, a LOT of bulldogs are allergic to beef, chicken and turkey - i've done so much experimenting with Hope and i'm currently feeding her commercially prepared raw (llama) and she is thriving on it.

lot of wheat allergies out there as well.

be kind to your kids.

Bulldog with chronic diarrhea
by: Kim

If you want to see a drastic change in your girl, start feeding raw. My 2 Bulldogs eat raw and have since they were puppies, I don,t have the skin yeast or other typical health problems, associated with this breed. As a matter of fact my female unbenost to me had girradia as a puppy and was the only one from the entire little,r not to become very ill. I fed her raw from day one and the other puppy parents fed kibble, Ireally believe the raw diet boosted her immune system and helped save her from becoming ill as did the other 6 puppies ,some seriously close to death.
Regards
Kim
Ps
Raw must be done correctly, find a vet her supports this
And knows about nutrition, not just what hills and royal canon brainwashed them with.

Bulldog Diarrhea
by: Anonymous

Had 2 Bulldogs, tried all make if dry food.
Changed to raw tripe, immediate result, hard stools forever
Buy raw and freeze
Only problem, raw tripe smells really bad when bought and when defrosted, need separate freezer, can't use house freezer, bought one for garage.
Anyway, try it, dogs absolutely love it and it works
Raw natural food..!

Same issue with olde english bulldog
by: Anonymous

Our baby is a year old tomorrow and we have the exact same issue.
We try other foods, slowly changing to the new, but then the diarrhea is worse and takes a couple of weeks to get back to her regular soft stools. She has had this since we got her at 8 weeks. Sometimes she has regular stools, but then goes weeks with only soft. Vet told us to give her canned pumpkin mixed with her food this does seem to help. There is not common denominator with the lose stool except changing her food makes it worse. She gets no people food. It's independent of weather, activity, treats, it just seems to be a chronic condition with her. :(

I was having the same exact with my 6 month american bulldog i just adopted. very loose stool. read all the different ideas online and tried them but nothing seemed to work. i noticed my dog would only pee a few times a day and they were very short pee breaks. I made sure he has plenty of water around him because i think he was dehydrated. I keep a water bowl in my room and one upstairs where his food is. I noticed a change in a day. lol he has too much energy and we give him too many bones and snacks a day for him to be drinking water a few times. hope this helps.

9 month old Olde English Bulldogge
by: Anonymous

My lil man Diesel has had loose stools since the day we got him. He's on Evo Red Meat formula which is grain free and very high in protein. We also mix in some Brown rice and burger mix food i make on a regular basis. The real secret is adding a few tablespoons of pumpkin. This mix has helped us so much. It's not totally perfect, but 19 out of 20 days isn't bad. Alos he never pottys in the hosue. He's full of life and energy. I also mix in a daily probiotic. It is just giving him everything we can to help the problem.

Sad news
by: Anonymous

Well, we didn't have any luck trying to figure out what was wrong with our lil bulldog. She sadly passed away on November 1st from acute renal failure at the age of 2 years. We are just devastated...Brought her to the university vet center 3 hours away in the middle of the night. All the Vets that I work with tried everything they could. Conclusion is that she was born with kidney issues and they believe that they never worked properly. Doesn't exactly explain why she had chronic diarrhea but she was born with kidney issues, so my suggestion would be to run tests on kidney function on your bullies that have the same issues as my Lola had. She had a UTI about a year ago that showed a lot of protein in her urine, but it is common to see protein in the urine with a UTI...but what we didn't know is that it was actually showing that she was having kidney problems back then that we didn't catch. We ran a BCP (Blood Chemistry Panel)about a month before she passed because she was vomiting and not eating normal...showed high kidney values, but she was very dehydrated with will also raise kidney values, but it was actually kidney failure. :( So that is my suggestion I guess...check the kidney function on your puppies.

Same Problem
by: English Bulldog Owner

I have a 4 year old female English Bulldog with the same issues. We have tried every type of dog food. She never gets any people food. Sometimes she has normal stools but then goes weeks with loose stools.
It never bothers her or affects her in anyway. Leaves me wiping her like a baby every day. Very frustrating and looking for an answer. We fight skin conditions and use a universal shampoo once a week to keep her maintained. I have noticed she does get watery eyes in the summer and fall when the pollen count is high. I have found that the more holistic foods I have tried the worse it has gotten. Venison by Nutro Max has given me the best results so far but not perfect. Open to any suggestions...

the search continues...
by: A.J.

I have never gotten any responses back or suggestions yet no. I know how frustrating this is believe me :P If you both need anyone to talk to about your frustrations about your bulldogs condition please post! I would be happy to listen. Since I posted this, my bulldog has been sick atleast 3 to 5 times. Found out the hard way that Prednisone is something she should never have...terrible vomiting and even more terrible diarrhea. I just keep putting her back on Metronidazole when she has "spells" guess I will never figure out why she has this. She is her spunky self all the time even though she has this condition, and she isn't losing weight. So hard to keep her from eating things though...she has a "garbage gut" for EVERYTHING! and the best sniffer in the world to find it too! Anywho...have you had any luck with your bullies?

We Have the Same Problem!
by: Amy

I have an Olde English Bulldogge who was also the runt of the litter. She has had the same problems since we got her at 7 weeks old from the breeder. She has eaten the same food since birth (the very high end organic kind). We have taken her for blood tests which have come back negative, had her on anti-biotics as well. Nothing has changed.

Did you ever get a response from this? If so, let me know!
